Herodotus 2500

The 'father of history' (as Cicero calls him) turns 2500 in 2017 - do the math! Author of the longest extant work of ancient/classical Greek prose, Herodotus of Halicarnassus (and Thouria) claims our attention for a number of reasons, including that he was a trailblazing pioneer in applying historia (research, enquiry) to the evidence handed down to him from the past and applying it to major, indeed world-shaking events and processes with a twofold aim, to preserve from oblivion great and wondrous deeds performed by both Greeks and non-Greeks, and above all to explain their causation. He thereby also became the father of comparative ethnography and historical cultural studies. What's not to like.
