While studying at the University of Ottawa I completed a Joint Honours in Geography and Environmental Studies in the bilingual stream. Today I am working as a junior analyst in the Energy Sector at Natural Resources Canada. I am responsible for assisting advisors with policy and legislation related to offshore oil and gas development as well as maintaining an updated information database for mapping Canada's offshore. I would definitely recommend that future geography or environmental studies students take as many GIS/Geomatics courses as possible because it definitely provides a competitive advantage when applying for jobs or new positions in your field. My supervisor was also really interested in my experience travelling and the field courses that I completed while studying. If I could change one thing about my degree I would have taken more courses in law and economics as it would have deepened my understanding when tackling complex policy issues.
