Born in 1960, Alexander Darchiev graduated from History Department, Moscow State University in 1983 and was a senior research fellow at the Institute of the US and Canada Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences from 1983 to 1992, after which, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Department of North America. From 1992 to 1997 he was the First Secretary for the MFA Department of North America. In 1997 he became a Counselor at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the US. From 2003 to 2005 he was the Deputy Director of the MFA Department of North America, after which he became the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the US. From 2010 to 2014 he was the Director of the MFA Department of North America, and was appointed as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Canada on October 24, 2014. He has a diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and has been decorated with numerous awards. He is married and father of a daughter.
