Why study linguistics?
Why study in linguistics
The Department of Linguistics offers the study of the science of language through approaches that combine linguistic theory and empirical areas. Students can expect to receive solid training in such basic areas as phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, all of which constitute the field of Formal Linguistics. This groundwork will serve as a foundation for other areas represented in the department, including language variation, language acquisition, speech science and historical linguistics, all of which constitute the field of empirical linguistics.
The Master's program allows students to conduct research in the previously mentioned fields of linguistics. This is a one-year program that is completed by a major research paper.
The Ph.D. program offers the most advanced level of training in the department and prepares candidates for professional careers in linguistics.
