 Michael van der Sloot, Associate Professor of Viola is in great demand as one of the leading viola teachers in Canada.  With 18 years teaching experience he has produced a generation of top Canadian violists.  Prior to his appointment at the University of Ottawa, he was Professor of Viola at Camosun College and Head of Strings and Artistic Director of the Collegium Young Artist Program at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. 

Michael van der Sloot graduated from the University of British Columbia where he completed his Bachelor and Masters Degrees, after which he pursued studies at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.  Soon after he became a member of the renowned Salzburg Chamber Soloists and toured Switzerland, Austria, Italy and France.

Following his performance career, Professor van der Sloot developed a passion for teaching and has dedicated almost two decades to the development of violists and violinists.  Many of his students can now be found in leading orchestras and chamber groups in North America. He has had the pleasure of being a guest artist at most of the universities in Western Canada.  In addition, he is a regular visiting guest artist at Mount Royal University and the Beijing Central Conservatory.
