After graduating from uOttawa in 2012 with a BA, Alison John studied Latin and Greek philology at the University of Toronto, where she received an MA in 2014. She moved to Edinburgh for her doctoral studies, supervised by Gavin Kelly and Lucy Grig, and passed her PhD viva in 2018, with the thesis Learning and Power: A Cultural History of Education in Late Antique Gaul. After a short period teaching Latin at Fettes College Preparatory School, she was awarded a Leverhulme Study Abroad Postdoctoral Fellowship, which she took to Ghent University in 2020 in order to work with Lieve Van Hoof on the topic of Greek in late Latin literary culture in Gaul.

She will start her five-year fellowship at All Souls, Oxford University, in October 2021, where she will research the place of Greek in the literary and political culture, religion, and daily life of Italy and Gaul, AD 300-700.
