John Spencer Hill was a much-loved colleague and teacher in the Department of English at the University of Ottawa from 1979-1998. He obtained his Bachelor of Arts and Masters Degrees from Queen’s University and his doctorate from the University of Toronto.
Professor Hill was an active scholar in Renaissance and Romantic studies and was also an accomplished writer of mystery novels. During his years at the University, he served as Director of Graduate Studies and subsequently as Chair of the English Department - thereby becoming acutely aware of the financial needs of students in the Department.
Dr. Hill passed away, unfortunately, at an untimely age when he was at the height of his career. The tributes from his students, both past and present, that poured in at the time of his passing were extraordinary, and it was this testimony to his powers as a teacher and mentor that inspired his colleagues to endow a scholarship in his name, a scholarship fund whose purpose, appropriately is not only to honour his memory but also to offer financial aid to students in the field of English. The John Spencer Hill Graduate English Scholarship provides financial assistance to graduate students in the Department of English.
