Biography

Michael Petrou is a writer and historian. His first book, Renegades: Canadians in the Spanish Civil War, was shortlisted for the Ottawa Book Award. His second book, Is This Your First War? Travels Through the Post-9/11 Islamic World, won it. He won three National Magazine Awards while a foreign correspondent at Maclean’s magazine and has reported from across the Middle East, Europe, and Central Asia.

He has also written for The Globe and Mail, The National Post, The New York Times, and The Atlantic. Petrou has published fiction in The Fiddlehead. He has a doctorate in Modern History from the University of Oxford, where he was a Chevening Scholar. In 2018, Petrou was the Martin Wise Goodman Canadian Nieman Fellow at Harvard University.
