Among the Jewish immigrants who came to Canada from the Russian Empire were a number of writers who pursued successful artistic careers in Montreal’s Yiddish speaking milieu. This book retraces the life and literary accomplishments of Jacob Isaac Segal (1896-1954) , probably Canada’s foremost Yiddish poet, much celebrated by the Jewish community during his life time. Through his poetry, translated in English by Vivian Felsen, we retrace the hopes and aspirations of the East European Jewish immigrants as they attempt to become Canadian citizens while remaining faithful to their cultural origins.
