The autobiography of Marc (Moshe) Chagall was first published in New York in 1925 in the progressive Yiddish monthly Di Tsukunft (The Future). In 1931 another version of the same text, probably translated from Russian, appeared in French in Paris under the title Ma vie (My Life). The two versions, published six years apart, contain considerable differences. Determined to restore the original text, Chantal Ringuet and Pierre Anctil decided to translate the 1925 Yiddish version into French for the first time. This translation will be published this month by Éditions Fides under the title Mon univers; autobiographie. This version is more closely situated in Chagall's Jewish cultural roots, and reveals the origins of Chagall's artistic impulse before his final departure for Paris in 1923.
