Ovide Mercredi is a member of the Misipawistik Cree Nation, a traditional knowledge keeper, educator, and expert in constitutional and Indigenous rights law. He is a former Grand Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN) and has served as Chief of Misipawistik Cree Nation and as Regional Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chief.


Since 1994, the Institute of Canadian and Aboriginal Studies has presented each year a prestigious lecture in Canadian studies designed to bring into focus a leading personality who has made a significant contribution to the study of Canada.
