In EMPTY AVIARY, the netted enclosure and transplanted fauna of an artificial habitat are replaced by the pristine solidity of the gallery space. This environment houses the work of five visual artists across a range of mediums – sculptural installation, oil painting, ceramics, and video – each engaging with the legacy of unmatched and endless fascination birds have provided that spans disciplines, histories and cultures. Their varied evocations draw upon a range of coexisting symbologies which find their corporeal embodiment in the diverse array of avian forms. The vibrant, wing-beating cacophony of the bird-house is present only through echo and reference, static signifiers hatched from the human propensity to ascribe metaphoric significance to observed phenomena of the natural world.
