Tina Pearson is a Canadian settler composer, multimedia artist and facilitator who remains fundamentally informed by her Canadian Shield origins. Her interests in sonic phenomena, perception and modes of human interaction have led to roles in art, education and community development. Her projects in live performance, audiovisual installation, and community collaboration engage spaces between disciplines, technologies, languages and species, and between creators, performers and audiences. Pearson's current work incorporates biospheric themes combined with stretched modes of performance attention and practice. Her association with the global collective, the Avatar Orchestra Metaverse, includes collaboration across distance, culture, discipline and language. She performs with extended flute and voice, tuned glass, accordion and virtual instruments.
Pearson’s work has been performed, installed and/or broadcast across North America and in Europe. Her collaborators have included music artists Pauline Oliveros, David Mott, James Tenney, Christine Duncan, Norman Lowrey, Bjorn Eriksson,Viv Corringham, John Oswald, Gordon Monahan, the Contact and arraymusic ensembles; dance artists Paula Ravitz, Denise Fujiwara, Grant Strate, Menaka Thakkar, Jennifer Mascall, Constance Cook, Lori Hamar and Jung-Ah Chung; media artists Leif Inge, Liz Solo, Paul Walde, Camille Norment and Grace Salez; performance artists John G. Boehme, Judith Price, Stelarc; among others. Recent commissions and invitations include Wind Stone Wood Bone for le Centre d'Experimentation Musicale (Chicoutimi, Québec), Carried On Your Winds for Intersection (Yonge-Dundas Square, Toronto); Blood in My Wires, Dust on My Breath (Factory Theatre, Toronto); Root, Blood, Fractal, Breath (for Contact at Allen Gardens Conservatory, Toronto); weighting, (with Lori Hamar, Victoria); Absorb (MediaNet, Victoria); This Is For You (ohrenhoch, Berlin); PwRHm (Florence, Italy; Madrid, Spain).
Pearson was editor of Musicworks magazine, taught at OCAD University’s Experimental Department, and was director of the Toronto New Music Cooperative. In Victoria, BC, she was new music curator at Open Space, and founding director of LaSaM Music. Pearson is a certified Deep Listening® practitioner through Pauline Oliveros. She is of Nordic and Slavic descent, and lives within the territories of the W̱SÁNEĆ and Lkwungen peoplesof the Coast Salish Nation.
