On November 3rd, a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate in the teaching of Portuguese language and culture was signed by His Excellency the Ambassador of Portugal, José Moreira da Cunha, by Prof. Joerg Esleben on behalf of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Ottawa, and by Prof. Carlos Valdez on behalf the School of Linguistics and Language Studies at Carleton University.
On November 2nd, a book launch took place in the Rotunda of Tabaret Hall for Tolstoy and Tolstaya – A Portrait of A Life in Letters. Edited by Andrew Donskov. Translated from the Russian by John Woodsworth, Arkadi Klioutchanski and Liudmila Gladkova. University of Ottawa Press, 2017. The event was attended by His Excellency the Ambassador of Russia in Canada, Alexander N. Darchiev, and by University of Ottawa President Jacques Frémont.
A new multilingual online literary magazine, Mïtra, will be launched on 21 October 2017 in Montreal. Alia Kawalit and Georges Abou-Hsab, who teach in our Arabic program, are members of the editorial committee as well as contributors. Congratulations to both of them!

Congratulations to Jason Dunkerley, alumnus of the MA program in World Literatures and Cultures, who won a silver medal in the men’s 1,500-metre T11 race at the World Para Athletics Championships in London on July 21.

Students from the UO took first, second, and third place in the 2017 Chinese Speech Contest, held on March 31st at Carleton University. The contest was for Ottawa region university students and constituted a preliminary selection of candidates for the 16th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Speech Contest for Foreign University Students.
