by Juana Muñoz Liceras

This volume is a contribution to the field of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) in general and the Acquisition of Spanish as a Second Language in particular. Although there are some important translations of second language acquisition studies into Spanish— most notably Liceras (1992) and Larsen-Freeman and Long (1991/1994)— this volume is a step ahead because it provides a detailed discussion of Second Language Acquisition and Universal Grammar based on studies dealing with the acquisition of Spanish. This is an indispensable volume for those interested in Spanish SLA because it not only pulls together a large number of studies in the acquisition of Spanish morphosyntax by native speakers of different languages but also because it discusses core learnability issues such as markedness, parametric theory or the logical problem of non-native language acquisition. It also discusses the advantages of building a bridge between SLA research and second language pedagogy. Specifically, it presents topics for further research in Spanish SLA, such as the distinction between learning and acquisition, the interaction of the different modules of the grammar, and the role of L1. As for the specific morphosyntactic structures investigated, they comprise the acquisition of relative clauses (wh-movement), topicalization and left-dislocation, preposition straining, clitic pronouns and null and overt subjects.

The role of formal features in second language aquisition, Juana Liceras

Edited by Juana Liceras and Helmut Zobl

The Role of Formal Features in Second Language Acquisition, edited by J. M. Liceras, H. Zobl and H. Goodluck, represents a unique contribution to the field of linguistic theory and the acquisition of non-native grammars. It puts together an extensive group of articles written by well-known scholars around the same topic: the role of formal features in Second Language Acquisition (SLA). Thus, one of the main values of the book is that of giving the reader a comprehensive idea about the main controversies, the hypotheses under debate about particular issues, and the questions which are still awaiting a better understanding. One of the authors’ main arguments is that it is not only that morphosyntactic features are intrinsically related to linguistic variation that makes them important for language acquisition but the further fact that features are conceptualized as the basic building units of linguistic structure. In fact, using a metaphor linking language to biological systems, the authors conceptualize features are the “DNA (base pairs)” of human language that, as bundles, constitute the “genes” (the functional categories) that determine the structure of particular languages. Therefore, acquiring the grammar of a given language will involve activating the features that, on the basis of input data, will lead to the projection of the functional structure that is specific to that language. All the contributions to this book are framed within Generative Grammar and discuss the theoretical and empirical implications for the field of acquisition of the latest approaches to language variation within the Minimalism Program (Chomsky 1995; 2000). Although the area highlighted in the title is that of second language acquisition, this area is investigated in the context of contributions relating specifically to first language acquisition, the acquisition of a third language as well as Specific Language Impairment and other language-related disorders such as Broca aphasics.

Edited by Gastón Lillo

New Christian Lives in Sixteenth-Century Rome, James Nelson Novoa

Being the Nação in the Eternal City: New Christian Lives in Sixteenth-Century Rome

By James W. Nelson Novoa

Being the Nação in the Eternal City , a new book by James William Nelson Novoa, explores in a set of case studies focusing on seven carefully chosen figures, the presence of Portuguese individuals of Jewish origin in Rome after the initial creation of a tribunal of the Portuguese Inquisition in 1531. The book delves into the varied ways in which the protagonists, representing a cross-section of Portuguese society, went about grappling with the complexities of a New Christian identity, and tracks them through their interactions with Roman society and its institutions. Some chose to flaunt Jewish origins. They espoused a sense of being part of a distinctive group, the Portuguese New Christian nação, that set them apart from other Portuguese. Others chose to blend as much as possible into the broader Iberian world represented at Rome, and avoided calling attention to their family past. All, however, had in their own way to work out the multiple shades of what was involved in being a Portuguese with Jewish roots needing to navigate the social and cultural pathways through Rome, the urban center of the Catholic Church. The book draws on archival research conducted in the Vatican, elsewhere in Italy, in Spain, and in Portugal. It brings a variety of sources to bear on the complex phenomenon of emergent group identities. It also proposes a critical reflexion on diasporas, the formation of sub-national communities, and on the structuring of collective memory in Early Modern Europe. The work will be useful to scholars and general readers interested in the Portuguese New Christian diaspora, in sixteenth century Rome, and in the dynamics of community consciousness in Early Modern Europe.

Proceedings of the Hispanic Linguistics Symposium 2013

Hispanic linguistics at the crossroads : theoretical linguistics, language acquisition and language contact : Proceedings of the Hispanic Linguistics Symposium 2013

Edited by Rachel Klassen; Juana M Liceras; Elena Valenzuela

This collection of articles, contributed by both experienced and novice researchers, addresses core issues in three different domains of Hispanic linguistics: theoretical linguistics, language acquisition and language contact. Together these papers provide an overview of how the analysis of Spanish contributes to current formal and experimental linguistics, while on an individual level offering fine-grained analyses and innovative proposals covering a wide range of areas such as semantics and pragmatics, syntax, morphology, phonology, prosody, dialectal variation, first, second and bilingual language acquisition, as well as sociolinguistics. The selection of chapters included in this volume were presented at the 17th Hispanic Linguistics Symposium hosted by the Language Acquisition Research Laboratory of the Department of Modern Languages at the University of Ottawa in October 2013 in Ottawa, Canada. The volume will be a resource for graduate students, academic and researchers in theoretical, experimental and descriptive linguistics in general and Hispanic linguistics in particular.

By Rosalía Cornejo Parriego

By Rosalía Cornejo Parriego
