Silent Film Music in Canada’ is a new website dedicated to presenting documents and stories about silent film music practices and communities in Canada in the early 20th century. Visitors can explore interactive maps and photos, browse newspaper advertisements and sheet music, and learn how to conduct their own research on local practices.

Based at the University of Ottawa, this website was developed by Elsa Marshall (MA 2017), Library and Audiovisual Support Specialist Roxanne Lafleur, and Professor Paul Merkley. The Ottawa section of the website is based on Marshall’s 2017 thesis on local practices and musicians, and the Hamilton portion of the website contains exhibits created by students of Merkley’s Fall 2017 course, ‘Researching Film Music: Theory, Production Practice’.
